Dharamshala is a town located in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated in the Kangra Valley and is surrounded by the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas. The town is divided into two parts – the lower Dharamshala, which is the commercial center, and the upper Dharamshala, which is also known as McLeod Ganj and is the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile.
Dharamshala is known for its natural beauty, pleasant weather, and cultural diversity. It is a popular tourist destination and attracts visitors from all over the world. The town is also famous for being the residence of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, who fled to India in 1959 after the Chinese occupation of Tibet. His residence is in McLeod Ganj, and the town is often referred to as “Little Lhasa” due to its large Tibetan population.
Apart from the Dalai Lama’s residence, McLeod Ganj is also known for its vibrant culture and is home to several Tibetan temples, monasteries, and institutions. The Namgyal Monastery is the largest Tibetan temple outside of Tibet and is located in McLeod Ganj. The town also has several trekking trails and is a popular base for trekking in the Dhauladhar mountain range.
